Our commission works to protect all residents of Newport News from unlawful discrimination due to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status or disability occurring in public places, schools as well as within real estate transactions and employment decisions.

The commission consists of 9 members. HRCAP Administering Agents are appointed by the Newport News City Council. Commission members are appointed to serve a four-year term. They can be reappointed to a maximum of two consecutive four-year terms.
COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT
April is National Fair Housing Month
NNHRC commissioners join our community to celebrate the 1968 passage of the Fair Housing Act, preventing discrimination in selling, buying, or financing a house based on race, color, gender, country of origin, familial status, disability, and religion.
Pathways to Progress Breakfast
The Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP), in partnership with the Newport News Human Rights Commission (NNHRC), and the Peninsula Community Development Corporation (PCDC), hosts this breakfast and awards ceremony annually. This event was established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations committed to expanding equal access to housing within Hampton Roads.
Universal Human Rights Month Breakfast
The Newport News Human Right Commission in partnership with the Hampton Roads Community Action Program hosts an annual holiday breakfast in December, bringing together community members, activists, and leaders to reflect on human rights issues and encourage active participation promoting equality and justice. Universal Human Rights month is an important reminder of the need to protect and respect the rights of all people regardless of gender, race, or social identity.
